Whether you live in the Northwest Corner, visit for the summer or travel here once in a while; these are our top five favorite local hot spots that we absolutely want you to try! (If you are a local) then you might just already know how fabulous these coffee shops already are! If you need to grab a cup of joe, meet with friends, or sneak in that perfectly delicious sweet treat each of these five places will have something that will pull you in and keep you coming back; time and time again.
The first spot on our list is Sweet Williams Bakery in Salisbury, CT (19 Main Street Salisbury, CT 06068)
The smallest coffee shop with the absolute best coffee. Why? Because they are roasting Barrington Coffee Roasting Company’s beans! And should I mention their fine selection of Harney & Son’s teas, or wait a minute– their own steamed hot chocolate, which is absolutely delectable! Looking for something to eat? They have all types of delicious baked goods including cookies and scones, biscotti and tarts. If a special occasion is coming up Sweet Williams is also a fantastic place to order a cake.
So just sit back and enjoy the beautiful view of Main Street. Outdoor seating in the summer months provides an excellent post to chill out and watch all of the people go by. If you don’t have time to sit, take it to go! Pre-packaged cookies and candies are also available and make quick last minute gifts.
It’s really hard for me to say this is our second favorite place, because each one has something different and unique to offer. Another local joint that is really well known for their outrageously tasty & affordable breakfast is Toymaker’s Cafe in Falls Village, CT. ( 85 Main St Falls Village, CT 06031)
Another little secret to visitors is that Toymakers is true motorcyclist’s destination. Ride through the countryside and make sure to stop here for breakfast or lunch! The atmosphere is “homey” and welcoming. The dining area has family style seating and photos of locals and their bikes adorn the walls. You will surely see a ton of Triumph and bike memorabilia. But more importantly all of their food options are fantastic, and the homemade waffles are always a fan favorite. I especially enjoy a good sausage, egg & cheese on a bagel and their prices just can’t be beat! Make sure you check the calendar before you head over to this hot spot. They are usually open Thurs-Sun.
Number three comes in under brand NEW ownership and is absolutely nothing like it was before! Black Forest Bakery in North Canaan CT holds the record for the best hands down baked goods all from scratch. (18 E Main St Canaan, CT 06018)
When the new owners took over this outdated local bakery they wasted no time refreshing up the dining area with bright paint colors and reusing old baking tins and rolling pins as wall art. Every baked good in the case from canolis, to cakes to tarts is made from scratch, and 100% irresistible! They also serve breakfast all day and lunch @11AM. They update specials daily and always have something unique to offer. By adding a home-made pesto to boring regular eggs a fantastic dish called, you guessed it “Green Eggs & Ham”– A sure to be favorite!
Number four comes in over the border in Millerton, NY Irvine Farm Coffee Roasters, (44 Main Street Millerton, NY 12546)
Irvine Farm brews their own coffee beans and offers many small but tasteful breakfast and lunch options. A little more expensive but the atmosphere certainly provides a retreat from the hustle and bustle of down town. Steps from this coffee shop you can do a little retail therapy at one of the many antique stores, vintage clothing shops or book stores.
And last but definitely not least is On The Run Coffee Shop in Lakeville, CT (4 Eathan Allen St Lakeville, CT 06039)
